Learning Objectives:
- Recall buprenorphine pharmacologic properties and indications for pain and OUD.
- Discuss the evidence for treatment of chronic pain with buprenorphine.
- Identify patients eligible for opioid rotation to buprenorphine, including those with Complex Persistent Opioid Dependence.
- Describe the process of initiating buprenorphine in various chronic pain scenarios.
This session is accredited for a maximum of 1.0 AOA Category 1-A credits. Credits commensurate with participation in the session will be awarded.

Dr. Sara Happel is a former ER and home health nurse turned Palliative Care Physician. She works at Eastern Maine Medical Center providing symptom management and general guidance to folks living with cancer and other complex progressive medical diseases and has a particular interest in the intersection of substance use disorder, mental health, and chronic pain, as well as expending access to underserved communities.

Whitney Jandreau is a Controlled Substances Stewardship Clinical Pharmacist Specialist at Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hopsital & Primary Care. Her practice experience includes a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at VA Maine Healthcare System followed by 8 years of inpatient practice before transitioning to her inpatient/outpatient position a year ago. Whitney has a clinical passion for substance use disorder and pain management.
