Primary care physicians treat the majority of chronic pain and are ideally situated to provide evidence-based pain care. Most medical evidence supports a biopsychosocial model of pain management that integrates physical, emotional, social and cultural variables. This session will expand the physicians understanding of pain, evaluation of the chronic pain patient and ability to direct evidence-based care.

John E. Balmer, DO, MSMedEd, “Narcotics and Pain Management,” is a physician at Spartansburg (Pa.) Regional Health Center and Canadohta Lake Health Center in Union City, Pennsylvania. He is also chief of staff and serves on the Board of Incorporators at Corry (Pa.) Memorial Hospital and medical director of EMS services at Spartansburg VFD Ambulance Service, Bloomfield Volunteer Ambulance Service in Union City and Bear Lake (Pa.) Volunteer Fire Department QRS. A graduate of Indiana (Pa.) University of Pennsylvania and a 1990 graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine, he also earned a master of science in medical education at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. Board certified in family medicine and neuromusculoskeletal medicine with certificates of added qualification in osteopathic manipulative medicine and pain medicine, Dr. Balmer completed an osteopathic internship at Millcreek Community Hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania and a residency at Latrobe (Pa.) Area Hospital. He is a member of POMA, the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, the American Academy of Osteopathy, the Osteopathic Cranial Academy, the Presque Isle Academy of Osteopathy, the American Osteopathic Academy of Addition Medicine, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Pennsylvania Medical Society.
