OMT for Athletes
This session will equip the learner with principles to properly assess athletes for somatic dysfunctions based on sport or exercise-related activities and develop treatment plans including OMT to address issues that commonly present in the athletic population.

This presentation will discuss ways to protect yourself, your staff and your patients through documentation in 2023. The speakers will review documentation of patient records and documentation on receipt. In addition, they will address disposition and disposal of drug samples.

The Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. TOMA designates is program for a maximum of 2.25 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Dr. Townes “Tucker” Leigh, Jr serves as an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and a team physician for SHSU athletics. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2006 and his medical degree from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2010. Dr. Leigh completed a three-year residency at the University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency in Tuscaloosa in 2013 and a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics in Birmingham in 2014. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine, Family Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, and holds a certificate of added qualification in Sports Medicine. Prior to coming to SHSU, Dr. Leigh served as a team physician for the University of Southern Indiana and Alabama State University as well as providing medical coverage for many local, regional, and national events.
Dr. Leigh has research interests that focus on the education of medical learners, Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, Primary Care Sports Medicine, the application of musculoskeletal ultrasound, and Quality Improvement in Primary Care Practice. He has previously presented his work nationally at the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine Annual Conference and STFM Medical Student Education Conference, and at the regional level during his time as Director of Osteopathic Education at the Southeastern Family Medicine Residency in NC. He also serves as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine and American Family Physician and question author for Aquifer Family Medicine, which enhances medical student learning through clinical cases during their clerkship.
Dr. Leigh currently resides in The Woodlands with his wife, Sarah, and their son, Townes.

Jeff McDonald is a founding partner of the law firm of McDonald, Mackay & Weitz, L.L.P., Austin, Texas. Licensed in Texas since 1988, Jeff has worked as an attorney in both the public and private sectors. He previously served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Austin, and as the Director of Hearings and Compliance for the Texas Medical Board, the Texas Physician Assistant Board, and the Texas Acupuncture Board. He is Board certified in Administrative Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and his current practice focuses primarily on physician licensure defense, health license defense, general administrative law, and professional licensing for health care providers, as well as other services.
Mr. McDonald also serves as the Field Representative for Texas Osteopathic Medical Association’s Impaired Physician Committee. He frequently works with health care professionals who are experiencing chemical dependency or mental health issues.

Attorney Jon Porter is a partner with the law firm of McDonald, Mackay, Porter & Weitz, LLP in Austin, Texas. With an extensive background handling legal, regulatory, and licensure issues, Jon Porter has built a reputation for being an experienced and highly skilled?professional license defense attorneys. Before attending law school, Mr. Porter was a licensed investigator for the?Texas Medical Board?for several years. Since becoming an attorney in 1999, Mr. Porter has worked extensively in both the public and private sectors. He was previously an appellate attorney for a large Houston-based law firm, writing briefs for various courts including the US Supreme Court and the Texas Supreme Court. In the public sector, Mr. Porter was a legislative aide for Texas Representative Senfronia Thompson. Mr. Porter returned to the Texas Medical Board as a prosecuting attorney and later became the Director of Enforcement and Compliance. Mr. Porter joined?McDonald, Mackay, Porter & Weitz, LLP?as a partner in 2003. His current practice focuses primarily on?physician?and?health license defense, general?administrative law, and professional licensing for health care providers. He frequently works with health care professionals who are experiencing chemical or mental impairment, standard of care issues, licensure matters and boundary issues. Mr. Porter is frequently called on for speaking on?topics of medical regulation?and medical-ethical issues.
