Description

This is a short review of the clinical utility of the coronary calcium score, particularly focused on the low-to-medium risk patient who is uncertain about the risks and benefits of more intensive preventive therapy (e.g., HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, aspirin, blood pressure-lowering drugs). The technology for determining a coronary calcium score is now more widely available, and has been proven to correlate with intracoronary stenoses, and to be a strong predictor of all-cause mortality. The discussion will center around two illustrative cases in which the coronary calcium score was quite helpful.
