Dr. Chuck Radis brings an unusual perspective to medicine. A graduate of the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine, he completed his internal medicine residency at Brighton Medical Center in 1985,
and moved to Peaks Island with his wife, Sandi, and children, Molly and Kate. In addition to clinic days on Peaks Island and Chebeague, he traveled to Long Island, and Cliff Island for house calls, and managed
his patients at Brighton Medical Center. In a typical year, he made more than 100 house calls. Although Dr. Radis eventually left his Island medical practice for fellowship training in rheumatology in
1991, he continues to commute year-round on his boat from his home on Peaks Island to the mainland. In recent years, he has also focused on Public Health projects in South Sudan and Uganda. A non-profit he co-founded with his wife, Sandi, and son-in-law, Dan Crothers, the Maine-African-Partnership for Social Justice, partners with refugee groups in the Kiryandongo United Nations Refugee Settlement in Uganda. Educational projects have included: traditional birth attendant training, first-aid training,
computer literacy, and sanitation and vaccination programs.
His book, Go by Boat, was published this spring by Down East Publishing. A second book, Island Medicine, will be released in the spring of 2022. Fifty per cent of the profits from Go by Boat are donated to the American Osteopathic Foundation for minority medical school scholarships as well as a Peaks Island scholarship fund to support islanders in their healthcare training.
