Description

Objectives– Following this lecture participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate how to evaluate, diagnose and treat TMJ with OMT 
  2. Understand Lymphatics Basics and how to provide fluid congestion relief for your patients with OMT techniques
  3. Demonstrate other similar OMM treatment techniques to be applied easily and briefly in an office visit

This session is accredited for a maximum 1.25 AOA Category 1-A credits. Credits commensurate with participation in the session will be awarded.

Dr. Heather Sharkey began her medical career at the tender age of 4 practicing on her sister with a Fisher Price medical kit. She graduated from Rutgers College with a degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. She graduated from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) and completed her residency in Family Medicine and the NMM/OMM fellowship at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Dr. Sharkey is board certified in Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. She was awarded the Young Osteopathic Physician of the Year Award in 2013 by the Maine Osteopathic Association. She was recognized as a Times Record "Best of the Midcoast" Physician in 2022.

Dr. Sharkey served as a Primary Care Physician at Martin’s Point Healthcare, St. Mary’s Health System, and most recently her own private practice in Yarmouth until 2023. She continues to see patients as an NMM/OMM specialist in Yarmouth, Maine.

Dr. Sharkey has been teaching at UNECOM since 2012 and is currently the Clinical Skills content lead for 1st year students. Her hobbies include being curious about lots of things, listening to podcasts during her commute to Biddeford, traveling, reading, writing, hiking, walking her dog, listening to the Portland Symphony Orchestra, watching the Maine State Music Theater, enjoying the natural world, and spending time with friends and family.

Dr. Yee came to osteopathic medicine later in life. She completed several degrees Bachelor of Liberal Arts, Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering, Masters of Biomedical Engineering and Masters of Mechanical Engineering working in various fields before attending UNECOM and graduating in 2005.

She finished the FP residency at UNECOM in 2008 and Then did the OMM Plus One at UNECOM graduating in 2009. She worked 1 year as attending with Dr. Bryan Beck in the osteopathic manipulation consultation service at Maine Medical Center and then headed to Western Massachusetts to join Berkshire Osteopathic Health in osteopathic family practice. She spent 12 years in the Berkshires and just this year, in November 2022, joined full time faculty at UNECOM.

Dr. Yee's driving interest is to get osteopathic physicians of all stripes to put hands on patients more often to provide more fulfilling care to the patients and to enable the physicians to enjoy their medical careers better.
