Dr. Shumway is one of the leading voices on clinical applications and workflow integration of large language model artificial intelligence in the osteopathic medical community. He has written thought-provoking pieces in The DO and peer-reviewed articles in the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as given dozens of accredited CME presentations on this topic at medical conferences nationwide. Most notably, he was chosen to brief the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) President, Board of Trustees, and affiliated osteopathic leaders as the keynote speaker at the AOA Midyear Meeting in 2024 for the first profession-wide strategic discussion on clinical artificial intelligence. His work was both instrumental to crafting and was heavily cited in the AOA’s first position paper on AI. Dr. Shumway helped to develop the American Osteopathic Information Association’s Digital Health Innovation Community of Practice (DHI-CoP), the osteopathic profession’s long-term response to emerging health technologies, and was one of the founding members of the DHI CoP steering committee. He has also served on the American Osteopathic Foundation’s (AOF) Osteopathic Future Initiative, advocating for digital health training in osteopathic medical education. Dr. Shumway is a graduate of both the AOA Leadership Academy and a Training in Policy Studies (TIPS) Fellow. Dr. Shumway is an active-duty Air Force physician and is board-certified in Internal Medicine. He completed residency at Keesler Air Force Base, and the AMP series at USAFSAM at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He is currently stationed at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom and practicing both Flight and Internal Medicine.
