Objectives:
-Understand the lived experience of patients with disabilities in Maine
-Outline the barriers to equitable rights (Voting, transportation, medical care)
-Describe some practical considerations and tips for creating more welcoming environments for these individuals (both in the exam room and in the world more generally)
The Maine Osteopathic Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. The Maine Osteopathic Association designates this program for a maximum of 1.0 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

K. Emily Redding, DO is Director of the Northern Light EMMC ONMM3 Residency and is faculty at the NL EMMC Family Medicine Residency. She is the Chair of the ONMM Postdoctoral Training Committee of the AAO and on the ACGME ONMM Residency Board of Appeals. She did her training at Eastern Maine Medical Center: 2010 NMM/OMM Plus One Residency, 2009 Family Medicine, 2007 St John's Episcopal Hospital South Shore (Surgery/Family Medicine), and WVSOM - Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, 2006 (Internship). She completed medical school at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, 2005 (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). She holds the following board certifications: American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (Family Medicine/OMT) & American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM).

Avery Olmstead has 51 years of personal & professional experience in the disability field. He uses a wheelchair, due to Cerebral Palsy. He has a BS in Rehabilitation Services from the University of Maine at Farmington, a post graduate certificate as a Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician from the University of Southern Maine and an MLIS in Library & Information Science from the University of South Carolina. Avery lives in Old Town with his cat (and owner), Lisa.
Avery is in the process of searching for his next career opportunity. Past professional positions have included: Consultant on various Health Equity projects for the University of Maine Center for Community Inclusion & Disability Studies and the Maine Developmental Disabilities Council, Public Relations Manager with Speaking Up For Us, Maine’s self-advocacy organization for adults living with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, and Academic Librarian for the Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he researched, the research that has been created on the Americans with Disabilities Act

Janet May, MEd, MS, CRC is Coordinator of Transition and Adults at the UMaine Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies (CCIDS). She has collaborated with several organizations to create programs which introduce youth with disabilities to careers in aquaponics and aquaculture. In addition, Janet works on CCIDS's project, Educating Providers through Narrative Advocacy: Promoting Health Equity for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) and Chronic Health Conditions.
