Description

Session Objectives: This session will discuss:

1. How do politics affect your practice of medicine -- national and local examples.

2. Who is looking out for you and how -- AOA advocacy overview, MOA advocacy role.

3. How can you get involved? -- Overview of grassroots/ AOA advocacy network, MOA legislative committee and other opportunities 4. General Advocacy tips -- how to talk to legislators, maintaining these relationships, how to prepare testimony and statements

This session is accredited for a maximum of 1.0 AOA Category 1-A credits. Credits commensurate with participation in the session will be awarded.

Sean Neal is the Vice President of Advocacy and Political Affairs with the American Osteopathic Association and has more than fifteen years of political and advocacy experience. Sean currently runs the Osteopathic Political Action Committee as well as heads the AOA’s grassroots programs on both the state and federal level.

Sean and his wife, Beth, currently live in Northern Virginia. Sean is a fan of all Washington sports and in his free time, Sean enjoys hiking, skiing, fishing, and woodworking.

Joel Kase, DO's Profile

Dr. Joel Kase is an osteopathic physician who throughout his career has beenactive in clinical practice, administrative operations, advocacy and policydevelopment, and medical education.

Dr. Kase has worked clinically in rural emergency medicine for 15 years, and prior to that, practiced the entire spectrum of osteopathic family medicine, including inpatient hospital and skilled nursing care, home health visits, obstetrics, and osteopathic manipulation. He is double boarded in Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine.

Dr. Kase currently practices clinical medicine full time. He previously served as the Emergency Department Director for the VA Maine Healthcare System, and prior to that as the Director of Medical Education for the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Kase is a member of the AOA’s Bureau on Federal Health Programs, and currently serves as Chair of the AOA’s Council on State Health Affairs. He is also a Past-President of the Maine Osteopathic Association, and serves as the Chair of the Maine delegation to the AOA House of Delegates. A graduate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Kase completed a family medicine residency as well as an academic fellowship in obstetrics through the teaching hospitals of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Additionally, Dr. Kase attended the Harvard School of Public Health, where he completed a Master’s Degree in Public Health with a concentration in Health Care Management and Policy.

Anne Sedlack graduated from the University of Vermont in 2013 where she majored in Anthropology and minored in Classical Civilizations and Studio Art.  After college, she served in AmeriCorps for two years at an alternative high school in Maine. She received her master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern Maine in 2017 and her law degree from the University of Maine School of Law in 2020. After law school, Anne clerked for the Hon. Joseph M. Jabar at the Maine Supreme Court.  And, before joining MMA, she worked in government affairs in a private practice in Maine. She is admitted to practice law in Maine.


Anne serves on the Public Arts Committee for the City of South Portland, the 4-H Camp & Learning Centers at Tanglewood & Blueberry Cove Board, and the Board for the Maine Child Welfare Services Ombudsman’s office. She lives in South Portland with her husband. She enjoys cooking for family and friends, playing board games and going on walks to the ocean.

Kathryn Brandt, DO's Profile

Kathryn Brandt is a 1997 alumna of UNE COM and received the Masters in Medical Education Leadership from UNE COM in 2011, and is board certified in Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. She has spent her career teaching osteopathic primary care, first at Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency from 2001-2012 and then at UNE COM as Chair of Primary Care.
She has a career long interest in the integration of osteopathic principles and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine into primary care and chronic disease management. She was the founding director of the Maine-Dartmouth NMM +1 Plus One Program and its associated multidisciplinary integrative clinic and has taught and advocated for these principles on a national level through the American College
of Osteopathic Family Practice and National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.

She has also engaged in the quest for delivery system reform and the
depoliticization of medicine in many venues including the Maine Osteopathic Association, Ibis Health Services, and MaineCare State Innovation Model Initiative.

Amanda Mahan (Richards)'s Profile

Amanda is the Executive Director of the Maine Osteopathic Association. She has served the organization in several roles since joining the team in 2016. Nationally, she serves on the board of the Association of Osteopathic State Executive Directors (AOSED) and is Co-Chair of its CME Committee. She also has been honored to serve as AOSED’s representative to the AOA’s Bureau of Membership for the past two years. Prior to her nonprofit work, Amanda gained experience planning corporate and private events at several Maine events companies and resorts. She attended the University of Maine where she earned a BA in Communication and continued her studies to earn a Master’s in Communication while teaching
introductory courses as a Teaching Assistant.

Amanda is a life-long Mainer who grew up in the mountains of Western Maine, but currently resides in Topsham with her new husband and their Black Lab Dill.
