Description

This session will provide a comprehensive overview of lung cancer, covering epidemiology, risk factors, prevention, screening, diagnostic techniques, staging, prognosis, and the full spectrum of treatment options. Special emphasis will be placed on Iowa-specific data, advances in molecular profiling, and emerging diagnostic and therapeutic innovations. 

Objectives:

  • Review U.S. and Iowa lung cancer epidemiology, risk factors, and prevention strategies
  • Summarize screening guidelines and management of incidental pulmonary nodules
  • Compare diagnostic techniques including bronchoscopy, CT-guided biopsy, and liquid biopsy
  • Explain the 9th edition TNM staging system and its impact on prognosis and treatment
  • Outline current and emerging therapies, including surgery, radiation, systemic treatments, and immunotherapy

MercyOne Iowa


Dr. Neil Horning is a board-certified Pulmonary and Critical Care physician, originally from East Tennessee. He earned his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and completed his Internal Medicine residency and Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine fellowship at Barnes–Jewish Hospital/Washington University Medical Center. Since joining MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center in 1998, Dr. Horning has played a leading role in advancing lung cancer care. In 2012, he spearheaded the development of the hospital’s Lung Cancer Screening Program, followed by the establishment of the Incidental Pulmonary Nodule Program, and the MercyOne Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic.
He currently serves as Co-Medical Director of these programs, guiding their clinical operations and ongoing growth.
