Short Description:
Older persons, especially the old-old (age 85 and older) represent the most rapidly growing population cohort in the industrialized world. With age comes the accumulation of diseases, injuries and other trauma that can lead to chronic pain syndromes. This presentation reviews the basic pathophysiology of pain and the types of pain encountered in clinical practice. Safe and appropriate use of available treatment options from non pharmacological, non-opioid  to opioid analgesics will be discussed in light of expert opinion from the American Geriatrics Society, the CDC and the FDA.

Although topical steroids are key for managing flares, the bulk of treatment weighs on the patient who’s daily skin care regimen can be time consuming and costly. From skin care products to eliminating triggers in the home or workspace, maintaining healthy skin may present quite challenging. Educating our patients on the basics of skin care management is key to improving quality of life.

Beginning with the original study, she will discuss what ACEs are, and how they affect children throughout a lifetime. She will then move on to discuss what can be done from a clinician’s perspective regarding screening and intervention. She will then tie in Social Determinants of Health. First going over what SDH and racism are defined as, and then looping in their connection to ACEs and overall child health. The talk will end with a discussion on how Pediatric clinics can adjust and change to incorporate these learnings and better care for patients.
