Emil P. Lesho, DO, FACP, FIDSA, FSHEA is an Infectious Diseases physician and the Healthcare Epidemiologist for Rochester Regional Health, Rochester, NY. Previously, Dr. Lesho served for 26 years on active duty in the U.S. Army. Following his deployment to Iraq, he was the Cofounder and Director of the Multidrug-resistant Organism Repository and Surveillance Network and the Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring and Research Program (MRSN-ARMoR) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, which is the Department of Defense’s (DoD) flagship agency for conducting epidemiologic surveillance and applied research of multidrug-resistant organisms isolated from healthcare associated infections including war trauma.

Dr. Lesho graduated magna cum laude from DeSales University, Center Valley, PA with a degree in biology, and from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia PA with D.O. degree.  He trained in Internal Medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center, Tacoma, WA and in Infectious Diseases at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC.  Dr. Lesho has co-authored 168 papers in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. He holds the position of Professor of Medicine (inactive) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD, and has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally on various internal medicine and infectious diseases topics, and most recently on the escalating crisis of antibiotic resistance.

Dr. Chuck Radis brings a singular perspective to his writing and is the author of Go by Boat, Island Medicine, Wildflowers of Casco Bay, and John Jenkins: the Mayor of Maine. Following graduation from Bates College, he committed to a career in osteopathic medicine after meeting a D.O. family practice bush pilot in Baja, Mexico.

Throughout his years as both a primary health care physician and later, as a specialist in rheumatology, Dr. Radis has published both in peer-reviewed scientific journals and in the popular press. He has written on empathy and kindness in medicine, the narcotic epidemic, and the logic of expanding Medicare for all Americans. As the founder and medical director for the Maine-African Partnership for Social Justice (www.mapsj.org) he has developed programs in the Kiryandongo United Nations Settlement in Uganda where he partners with refugee groups in innovative public health programs.  

For the last 40 years he has taught in the musculoskeletal system at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he is a Clinical Professor of Medicine, and continues to enjoy his connections with our next generation of osteopathic physicians.

She intends to run for the national Board of Directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 2024. Lewis Mehl-Madrona, MD, graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine and trained in family medicine, psychiatry, and clinical psychology. He completed his residencies in family medicine and in psychiatry at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He has been on the faculties of several medical schools, most recently as associate professor of family medicine at the University of New England. He continues to work with aboriginal communities to develop uniquely aboriginal styles of healing and health care for use in those communities. He is interested in the relation of healing through dialogue in community and psychosis. He is the author of Coyote Medicine, Coyote Healing, and Coyote Wisdom, a trilogy of books on what Native culture has to offer the modern world. He has also written Narrative Medicine, Healing the Mind through the Power of Story: the Promise of Narrative Psychiatry, and, his most recent book with Barbara Mainguy, Remapping Your Mind: the Neuroscience of Self-Transformation through Story. Lewis currently works with Wabanaki Public Health and Wellness, which serves the five tribes of Maine. He also works part-time at Acadia Hospital and with the Family Medicine Residency at Eastern Maine Medical Center. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Coyote Institute for Studies of Change and Transformation. Lewis has been studying traditional healing and healers since his early days and has written about their work and the process of healing. His primary focus has been upon Cherokee and Lakota traditions, though he has also explored other Plains Cultures and those of Northeastern North America. His goal is to bring the wisdom of indigenous peoples about healing back into mainstream medicine and to transform medicine and psychology through this wisdom coupled with more European-derived narrative traditions. He has written scientific papers in these areas and continues to do research. He writes a weekly (almost) blog on health and mental health for www.futurehealth.org. His current interests center around psychosis and its treatment within community and with non-pharmacological means, narrative approaches to chronic pain and its use in primary care, and further developing healing paradigms within a narrative/indigenous framework.

He started and is the Director of Heart Failure Clinic at St. Joseph Hospital where he also serves as Chief of Medicine, Vice-President of the Medical Executive Committee, Chairman of the Ethics Committee, and Chairman of the Credentials Committee. Drew Gray has worked in Maine pharmacies for over 18 years. He began his career in retail pharmacy at age 19 and has since worked in multiple fields including long-term care, hospital, and specialty pharmacy. In addition to daily pharmacist tasks, he oversees the compounding laboratory at Coastal Pharmacy and Wellness. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Rhode Island in 2009. Upon graduation, he moved back to his home state of Maine, where he thoroughly enjoys the Maine way of life. “Providing honest and friendly patient care has been the mainstay of my pharmacy career. There’s nothing more rewarding than establishing a relationship with a patient and being able to have a positive impact on their health and life”. Joe Piorkowski, Jr, DO, JD, MPH has served as the leader of national expert witness teams for the defense of Norplant, Sulzer hip and knee implant, Baycol, and YAZ/Yasmin litigations. He has experience representing scientists, physicians, other health care providers, hospitals, and other product manufacturers in a wide range of litigation, including toxic tort/products liability cases, medical malpractice actions, peer review proceedings, and FDA matters. Joe has been repeatedly selected as one of Washington, DC’s “Superlawyers” for Personal Injury Products (Defense) and he has been repeatedly listed by Washingtonian magazine as one the “Best Lawyers in Washington.” Joe is a osteopathic physician as well as an attorney and is board certified in three areas, including family practice. He served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Naval Reserve Medical Corps for over 25 years until his retirement with the rank of Captain in 2005. Dr. Conte is a graduate of A.T. Still University – Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is board certified in both Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. Alicia “Lee” Smilowicz, DO, FAAO, Joined the Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in June. Dr. Smilowicz is an UNE COM alum, class of 2000 and former Anatomy/OMM Fellow. Lee completed an Internal Medicine residency program at Wilson Memorial Hospital 2001-2004 and a +1 Residency Training in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/OsteopathicManipulative Medicine at University of North Texas Health Science Center 2004-2005. She subsequently was employed by UNECOM as an Assistant to Associate Clinical Professor October 2005-May 2013. Dr. Yee came to osteopathic medicine later in life. She completed several degrees Bachelor of Liberal Arts, Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering, Masters of Biomedical Engineering and Masters of Mechanical Engineering working in various fields before attending UNECOM and graduating in 2005.

She finished the FP residency at UNECOM in 2008 and Then did the OMM Plus One at UNECOM graduating in 2009. She worked 1 year as attending with Dr. Bryan Beck in the osteopathic manipulation consultation service at Maine Medical Center and then headed to Western Massachusetts to join Berkshire Osteopathic Health in osteopathic family practice. She spent 12 years in the Berkshires and just this year, in November 2022, joined full time faculty at UNECOM.

Brock Libby, MD joined Maine Medical Partners at South Portland Pediatrics as a Pediatrics | Adolescent Medicine specialist in July 2019. After earning his bachelor of science degree in biology and bachelor of arts degree in sociology from the University of Maine, he went on to earn his medical degree at the University of Vermont. He then completed his residency in pediatrics at the University of Virginia, which included an additional year acting as chief resident. He culminated his training in 2019 with an adolescent medicine fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Sarah is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire College of Life Science and Agriculture (2019). While at UNH, she majored in Biomedical Sciences: Medical and Veterinary Sciences with focus areas in Genetics and Psychology. The research Sarah conduced while at UNH involved bat populations in the Oklahoma Tallgrass Prairies and their relationship to anthropogenic noise. Following graduation, Sarah worked for the Agency of Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (CDC) as a contractor through Abt Associates to investigate the long-term health implications of PFAS/PFOA-contaminated water ingestion. Directly prior to attending UNECOM, Sarah worked for United Therapeutics on the research and development team. Here she was dedicated to ending the organ donation shortage through development of 3D-printed, biocompatible hydrogel scaffolds for lung transplants. Isabel Smith is a third-year medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. She grew up in Greene, Maine, and graduated from Brandeis University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Currently, she is completing her clinical clerkships at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
She plans to specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Isabel is passionate about reproductive health and improving healthcare for gender-diverse people, especially within her home state of Maine. She spends most of her free time outdoors, and enjoys surfing, rock climbing, and mountain biking.

Aishwarya Ayyappan is a third year medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and is currently rotating at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, NY. She is interested in General Surgery and Diversity in Medicine. She was a Pathways to Inclusive Healthcare scholar at UMASS Medical School and is now a scholar in the Care for the Underserved Pathways program at UNECOM. In 2018, she earned High Honors in Biology for her research on the inheritance of obesity in fruit flies. In 2021, she became a Kahn Foundation Research Fellow investigating pain sensitivity in rats after optogenetic activation of CRF+ cells. Lastly, as President of the Dancin’ Docs club she created and organized the Diversity Gala event, for which she won the Start-Up of the Year award in 2022. Today, she is here to present a case presentation on Inferior Mesenteric Vein Thrombosis as a rare complication of Acute Diverticulitis.

Arsal graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Psychology at the University of Connecticut (UConn) in May of 2019. At UConn, he did research in behavioral neuroscience, which helped build his interest in studying the brain and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). In August of 2019, Arsal joined the Boston University CTE Center and Brain Bank and pursued his current research interests, which include the quantification of neurodegeneration in CTE. Arsal is currently a first-year medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) and is continuing his interests in studying the brain as President of the Neuro/Psych Club.

Dr. Pierce-Talsma is the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the University Of New England College Of Osteopathic Medicine.  She is a MSUCOM graduate who completed an Internship, Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Residency program, and Masters in Medical Education and Leadership at UNECOM.  She is a Fellow in the National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators (NAOME) and is a past AOA Health Policy Fellow. Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD is a Professor of Pharmacology and Physiology with a joint appointment in the Department of Family Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Fugh-Berman codirects the M.S. program in Health and the Public Interest and directs PharmedOut, a GUMC research and education project that promotes rational prescribing, exposes the effect of pharmaceutical marketing on prescribing practices and has had a profound impact on prescribers’ perceptions of the adverse consequences of industry marketing.

Dr. Fugh-Berman has authored many key articles in peer-reviewed literature on the area of industry influence on medicine, including the first studies in the medical literature about how the pharmaceutical industry influences surgeons, pharmacists, basic scientists, and individual patients. Other key articles include the first comprehensive article on marketing messages in continuing medical education, including studies of messaging in CME on on short-acting opioids, fentanyl, binge-eating disorder, and hypoactive sexual desire disorder; a national survey of dentists attitudes about opioids, a study that shows that Medicare prescribers who accept industry gifts prescribe more medications (and more expensive medications), a review of how industry uses social psychology to manipulate physicians, an exposé of how ghostwritten articles in the medical literature were used to sell menopausal hormone therapy, an article about how “key opinion leaders” are used to market drugs off-label, an explanation of drug rep tactics, a national survey of industry interactions with family medicine residencies, and a study of the first educational activity that changed physicians’ perceptions about their own individual vulnerability to pharmaceutical marketing.
