Short Description:
Measles remains a critical topic for physicians due to its resurgence in recent years, despite being a vaccine-preventable disease. With increasing vaccine hesitancy, global travel, and disruptions in routine immunizations—particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic—measles outbreaks have re-emerged in the United States and globally, threatening population immunity. These outbreaks underscore the urgent need for clinicians to be able to recognize early signs and symptoms, understand diagnostic strategies, and implement timely infection control measures. In addition, physicians play a key role in addressing vaccine hesitancy, educating families, and reinforcing public health messaging. This session will provide essential updates on measles epidemiology, clinical management, and strategies to prevent transmission, equipping healthcare providers with the knowledge needed to respond to current challenges in measles control.

Short Description:
While rates of detection and treatment of hypertension have improved since the beginning of the national HBP education program, much more still needs to be done to recognize and to treat hypertension. Since there have not been any new antihypertensive drugs coming to market in over 20 years, public and provider awareness has not been promoted as it was previously. The review would remind them of the importance to patients of physicians always actively screening, diagnosing, and, when appropriate, treating hypertension.

Short Description:
Obesity is a significant public health issue that affects millions of individuals worldwide and is associated with numerous comorbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Bariatric surgery has emerged as an effective treatment option for individuals who are severely obese and who have not achieved significant weight loss through non-surgical methods. Despite its effectiveness, bariatric surgery remains underutilized, often due to misconceptions about its risks, benefits, and the complexities of post-surgical care. The purpose of this lecture is to address the educational needs of healthcare professionals and potential bariatric surgery candidates by providing a comprehensive overview of bariatric surgery, from the clinical indications and various surgical options to the long-term outcomes and psychological considerations. Understanding these key concepts is crucial for both providers and patients to make informed decisions and improve surgical success.

Short Description:
Rapid availability of wearable devices to diagnose atrial fibrillation cause confusion with these devices. Physicians need to understand the limitations of wearables in the diagnosis of atrial fibrillation and understand what wearable devices can and cannot provide. Anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation has changed dramatically with the DOACs, how to prescribe, monitor and reverse when necessary. Physicians need to know how to dose, monitor, reverse and prepare for elective procedures. Physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants treat atrial fibrillation rate vs. rhythm as they were taught. The current practice remains controversial concerning which strategy to follow and practitioners need to understand when to choose rate vs. rhythm control.

Any information that contradicts scientific evidence and could be detrimental to an individual. Patients often get their “medical” information and advice from other than their physicians. In fact, 52% get it from social media and 37% from a search engine. It is important for physicians to be able to address this misinformation with their patients.

Short Description:
Primary Immune Disorders (PI) are a diverse group of inherited immunologic disorders made up of more than 550 known variants. Clinical presentations can range from recurrent and/or severe infections, immune dysregulation, pathologic inflammation, and some forms of cancer. This heterogeneity of disease within a singular category makes diagnosis incredibly challenging. Our work shows that there is a distinct lack of expert clinical immunologists practicing within the United States, especially within rural communities. Together, these factors highlight an incredible need within rural areas to educate primary care clinicians due to the lack of nearby specialist treatment options, in order to ensure high quality and consistent care for rural PI patients.
