Short Description:
Measles remains a critical topic for physicians due to its resurgence in recent years, despite being a vaccine-preventable disease. With increasing vaccine hesitancy, global travel, and disruptions in routine immunizations—particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic—measles outbreaks have re-emerged in the United States and globally, threatening population immunity. These outbreaks underscore the urgent need for clinicians to be able to recognize early signs and symptoms, understand diagnostic strategies, and implement timely infection control measures. In addition, physicians play a key role in addressing vaccine hesitancy, educating families, and reinforcing public health messaging. This session will provide essential updates on measles epidemiology, clinical management, and strategies to prevent transmission, equipping healthcare providers with the knowledge needed to respond to current challenges in measles control.

Short Description:
Obesity is a significant public health issue that affects millions of individuals worldwide and is associated with numerous comorbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Bariatric surgery has emerged as an effective treatment option for individuals who are severely obese and who have not achieved significant weight loss through non-surgical methods. Despite its effectiveness, bariatric surgery remains underutilized, often due to misconceptions about its risks, benefits, and the complexities of post-surgical care. The purpose of this lecture is to address the educational needs of healthcare professionals and potential bariatric surgery candidates by providing a comprehensive overview of bariatric surgery, from the clinical indications and various surgical options to the long-term outcomes and psychological considerations. Understanding these key concepts is crucial for both providers and patients to make informed decisions and improve surgical success.

Short Description:
Since 2021 there have been human deaths related to rabies in Illinois, Nebraska, and Minnesota. While the canine rabies variant was eradicated from dogs in the U.S. in 2008, rabies variants persist in bats, skunks, wildlife, and occasionally domestic animals in Iowa. While the outcome for any mammal, including a person, is death once the clinical signs of rabies manifest, rabies is 100% preventable after a known exposure before signs develop. Prompt assessment and administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is key to preventing human deaths from rabies.

Vaccination has been one of the most significant public health achievements in human history, drastically reducing the prevalence of infectious diseases and saving countless lives. However, recent trends indicate a decline in vaccination acceptance and completion rates in the US and Europe. This decline is a pressing issue that requires a coordinated effort from healthcare providers. Pediatricians, other primary care providers, and specialists must employ consistent, evidence-based strategies to engage families and the broader society in fostering vaccine acceptance and protecting public health by adhering to the current vaccine schedule. By participating in this session, healthcare providers will be equipped with strategies to implement current vaccination schedules, address disparities, and effectively communicate with patients and caregivers to enhance vaccine uptake and public health outcomes.
