Mortality and morbidity due to metabolic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity continues to be a pervasive problem in the United States. Effectively addressing this should include an interdisciplinary approach that also features cultural competency and considerations.
At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Collaborate with health care peers in community settings.
- Create relationships with healthcare organizations to address chronic illnesses in targeted populations.
- Strategize ways to service the needs of marginalized communities in an impactful way, including identifying resources that address food insecurity and organizations that teach gardening for wellness in urban areas.

Ms. Eligon-Ketchum is a graduate of Florida International University and completed a dietetic internship at the University of Delaware. Ayanna S. Kersey-McMullen, DO, MSPH, “An Interdisciplinary Approach to Metabolic Disease Management with Cultural Considerations,” is staff physiatrist and medical director at Good Sheperd Rehabilitation Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and lifestyle medicine, Dr. Kersey-McMullen is a graduate of Clark Atlanta University and the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, New Jersey. She also completed a master of public health degree in health policy and administration from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill School of Public Health.
