Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in a young athlete is an infrequent yet devastating event. Clinicians need to know the most current protocols for pre-athletic participation screening which are necessary to refine the detection of silent cardiovascular diseases that predispose young individuals to sudden cardiac death.
At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Utilize ECG in routine screening of student athletes.
- Employ advanced cardiac imaging in those with abnormal ECGs.

James McEldrew, DO, “Current Screening for High School and College Athletes, Including Sudden Death in Sports,” is an adult cardiovascular disease fellow at the Heart and Vascular Institute at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame (Ind.) and a 2019 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, he completed an internal medicine residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. He is a member of POMA, the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Physicians, the European Society of Cardiology, the American Society of Echocardiography and the American Heart Association.
