Description

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Differentiate between burnout and moral injury and recognize their impact on healthcare professionals, including how personal experiences and systemic failures contribute to emotional distress.
  2. Apply the fifth osteopathic model (behavioral) to understand the interplay between emotional states, musculoskeletal health, and holistic patient care, and explore its relevance in mitigating burnout and moral distress.
  3. Develop a holistic framework to address burnout and isolation, incorporating osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), peer support, advocacy, and educational strategies at both individual and system levels.

ACCREDITATION

The Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association (POMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. POMA designates this activity for a maximum of 1 Category 1-A AOA CME credits and will report CME and specialty credits to the AOA commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Rehab Tabchi, DO, “Intersection of Illness, Professionalism, Moral Distress and Burnout,”  is associate program director of the St. Luke’s Family Medicine Residency Program at the Sacred Heart Campus in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Board certified in family medicine, she is also medical director of Star Community Health Family Practical – Sigal in Allentown and an adjunct assistant professor of clinical medicine for the Temple University School of Medicine. A graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and a 2007 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Tabchi completed a family medicine residency at Sacred Heart Hospital. Chair and trustee of POMA District 3, she is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Family Physicians Society.

Renata Carneiro, PhD, “Intersection of Illness, Professionalism, Moral Distress and Burnout,” is a behavioral medicine faculty member and research advisor in the family medicine residency program at St. Luke’s Sacred Heart Campus in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Dr. Carneiro earned her bachelor’s in psychology and a graduate degree in applied psychology from the University of Baltimore in Maryland, and received her doctor of family therapy from Drexel University in Philadelphia. Dr. Carneiro also has certificates in psychological first aid, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing training, Balint training and medical narrative facilitation.
