Description

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply current evidence-based guidelines from the ACC/AHA and ESC to stratify cardiovascular risk in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery, including the use of validated risk calculators and assessment of functional capacity.
  2. Identify appropriate indications for preoperative testing, including ECG, echocardiography, biomarkers, stress testing, and cardiac catheterization, and determine when such testing will impact perioperative management and outcomes.
  3. Optimize perioperative cardiovascular management, including medication adjustments (e.g., statins, beta blockers, anticoagulants), and recognize contraindications to surgery in patients with acute cardiac conditions such as ACS, decompensated heart failure, or lethal arrhythmias.

ACCREDITATION

The Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association (POMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. POMA designates this activity for a maximum of 1 Category 1-A AOA CME credits and will report CME and specialty credits to the AOA commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Jason Kaplan, DO, FACC, FACP Related Seminars and Products


Jason E. Kaplan, DO, FACC, FACP, “Preop Evaluations,” is medical director of the echocardiogram laboratory at Pottstown (Pa.) Medical Specialists and a non-invasive cardiologist at St. Luke’s University Health Network – Allentown Campus. He is also a clinical associate professor of cardiology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) and a clinical assistant professor at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University.  Board certified in internal medicine and cardiology, Dr. Kaplan is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University in State College, and a 2013 graduate of PCOM.  He completed an internship and internal medicine residency at PCOM and a cardiology fellowship at Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine in New Jersey. A fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians Dr. Kaplan is a member of POMA, the American Osteopathic Association, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Echocardiography and Society for Osteopathic Medical Educators.
