Short Description:
Measles remains a critical topic for physicians due to its resurgence in recent years, despite being a vaccine-preventable disease. With increasing vaccine hesitancy, global travel, and disruptions in routine immunizations—particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic—measles outbreaks have re-emerged in the United States and globally, threatening population immunity. These outbreaks underscore the urgent need for clinicians to be able to recognize early signs and symptoms, understand diagnostic strategies, and implement timely infection control measures. In addition, physicians play a key role in addressing vaccine hesitancy, educating families, and reinforcing public health messaging. This session will provide essential updates on measles epidemiology, clinical management, and strategies to prevent transmission, equipping healthcare providers with the knowledge needed to respond to current challenges in measles control.

While rates of detection and treatment of hypertension have improved since the beginning of the national HBP education program, much more still needs to be done to recognize and to treat hypertension. Since there have not been any new antihypertensive drugs coming to market in over 20 years, public and provider awareness has not been promoted as it was previously. The review would remind them of the importance to patients of physicians always actively screening, diagnosing, and, when appropriate, treating hypertension.

Short Description:
Obesity is a significant public health issue that affects millions of individuals worldwide and is associated with numerous comorbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Bariatric surgery has emerged as an effective treatment option for individuals who are severely obese and who have not achieved significant weight loss through non-surgical methods. Despite its effectiveness, bariatric surgery remains underutilized, often due to misconceptions about its risks, benefits, and the complexities of post-surgical care. The purpose of this lecture is to address the educational needs of healthcare professionals and potential bariatric surgery candidates by providing a comprehensive overview of bariatric surgery, from the clinical indications and various surgical options to the long-term outcomes and psychological considerations. Understanding these key concepts is crucial for both providers and patients to make informed decisions and improve surgical success.

Rapid availability of wearable devices to diagnose atrial fibrillation cause confusion with these devices. Physicians need to understand the limitations of wearables in the diagnosis of atrial fibrillation and understand what wearable devices can and cannot provide. Anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation has changed dramatically with the DOACs, how to prescribe, monitor and reverse when necessary. Physicians need to know how to dose, monitor, reverse and prepare for elective procedures. Physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants treat atrial fibrillation rate vs. rhythm as they were taught. The current practice remains controversial concerning which strategy to follow and practitioners need to understand when to choose rate vs. rhythm control.

Urolithiasis, the formation of stones in the urinary tract, is a common condition encountered in primary care settings. Although the incidence and prevalence of urolithiasis have been increasing, many primary care physicians (PCPs) face challenges in timely diagnosis, prevention, and management due to the complexity and variability of the condition. With advancements in diagnostic tools, medical treatments, and surgical techniques, it is essential that PCPs remain up-to-date on the latest evidence-based practices to optimize patient care.

Primary Immune Disorders (PI) are a diverse group of inherited immunologic disorders made up of more than 550 known variants. Clinical presentations can range from recurrent and/or severe infections, immune dysregulation, pathologic inflammation, and some forms of cancer. This heterogeneity of disease within a singular category makes diagnosis incredibly challenging. Our work shows that there is a distinct lack of expert clinical immunologists practicing within the United States, especially within rural communities. Together, these factors highlight an incredible need within rural areas to educate primary care clinicians due to the lack of nearby specialist treatment options, in order to ensure high quality and consistent care for rural PI patients.

Since 2021 there have been human deaths related to rabies in Illinois, Nebraska, and Minnesota. While the canine rabies variant was eradicated from dogs in the U.S. in 2008, rabies variants persist in bats, skunks, wildlife, and occasionally domestic animals in Iowa. While the outcome for any mammal, including a person, is death once the clinical signs of rabies manifest, rabies is 100% preventable after a known exposure before signs develop. Prompt assessment and administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is key to preventing human deaths from rabies.

Despite increasing awareness, eating disorders remain underdiagnosed and undertreated, especially in individuals who do not fit the stereotypical presentation. This session explores the systemic, clinical, and cultural barriers that impede equitable access to eating disorder (ED) care, with a focus on the role healthcare providers—particularly osteopathic physicians—play in either reinforcing or dismantling these obstacles. Attendees will examine the pervasive impact of weight stigma in clinical settings, evaluate the limitations of weight-centric models, and be introduced to weight-neutral frameworks that align with osteopathic principles of whole-person care. This session will empower providers to deliver compassionate, inclusive care that prioritizes behavioral health and patient well-being over weight-focused outcomes through case examples, evidence-based strategies, and interactive discussion.

*** Please note this program was a part of the MOA 's 2025 Midwinter Symposium. You will not want to choose this program if you completed this individual program as part of the MOA 2025 Midwinter Symposium. *** Mainers are living longer, healthier, more productive lives than ever before, but our negative narratives about aging and being old haven’t kept pace. Research has shown that positive attitudes about aging can result in longer and healthier lives, while ageist attitudes are damaging. Getting appropriate quality care that is free of bias is an important part of maintaining good health long into later life. Healthcare providers are in a unique position to influence people both to promote age positivity and to reduce the negative impacts of ageism. This presentation will detail what it will take to shift the narrative about the value and diversity of older people, to grow age-positivity, and to implement ageism disrupters at the practice level.
